Many people have effectively and successfully lost their weight from 4-month running plans. And for those who like running at a park or a running track, you would notice that at the beginning of each year most parks and running tracks would be crowded with a lot of runners. By asking around some friends and some friendly runners to find out the reason, most of the answers given were pretty much the same in which many of the runners chose running for weight loss as one of their New Year’s resolutions.

Today, Namman Muay was glad to receive this great opportunity to interview one of the runners who has successfully lost his weight with running. Gig, a fresh-faced runner whose inspiration for running comes from the brightness of every new day, has shared his story, motivation, and running techniques for weight loss with us here.

When did you start your running routine for weight loss seriously?

I started my very first run 4 years ago. Back then, I used to stay up late and sleep in every morning. My turning point, however, started when I joined the monkhood and had to get up very early every morning. By having to do so, I then realized that getting up early was actually enjoyable and beneficial as I could enjoy the fresh air, the warm sunshine, and the peaceful and beautiful ambience which made me fall in love with. And after leaving the monkhood, I then started practicing my running routine to keep enjoying the morning vibes and I have been an early bird since.

How many kilograms did you lose at the beginning?

I did not lose a lot of weight at the beginning, even though I had lost a little bit of weight during the monkhood. I remember weighing about 78 kilograms which was the worst point of my life as I was overweight with a big belly from the unhealthy lifestyle in the past. But after sticking with my running routine for a while, I then lost 6 – 7 kilograms.

As an overweight person trying to lose weight for the first time, there would always be challenges and obstacles along the way. Was there anything holding you back and making you feel like giving up and quit?

My problem may be different from others’ such as “Lack of running buddy” as none of my friends wanted to come for a run with me at the beginning (Hahaha!). Joking aside, the real problem for me was that I was unaware of myself making some running mistakes at the beginning. I was so committed to running for weight loss and so I ran a lot, maybe too much. What happened to me as a result was that I lost not only a lot of weight but also most of my muscle mass. Many of my friends even said that I looked too skinny and because of that I seemed to have bad posture.

How did you solve the problem to continue with your running routine for weight loss?
I did a lot of research about running afterward. I have now learned that heart rate monitoring is very important and we should maintain our heart rate at Zone 2 or 3 as it helps enhance your cardiovascular fitness and optimize fat utilization, which is key to weight loss, while still maintaining your muscle mass. Moreover, I have also turned to a low-carb diet while still eating 3 meals a day as usual.

What would you like to say to anyone who is attempting at running for weight loss?

There are many types of running for weight loss. Not all of them is suitable for everyone. Therefore, we should do some research on which type really fits us. Running is not only about speed, we should also focus on keeping our heart rates steady and monitoring our maximum limits. If the heart rate is not under control, it can increase the risk of heart attack. Apart from proper running plans, diet control is one of the key components of successful weight loss.

“I was not motivated enough to exercise as I did not have any friends to accompany me to the gym at first. So, I then found myself a group of friends who enjoyed exercising to help get me back on track, and also a trainer who was attentive, always followed up with me, and motivated me constantly.”

Here is another fitness enthusiast. Her name is First. A beautiful lady and former JAL flight attendant who has been doing some exercises for weight loss and for maintaining her beautiful and toned body as it currently is.

When did you start doing exercises for weight loss?
Four years ago, running was not my first choice of exercises as I started off by joining some dance classes instead because I did enjoy music and dancing more. I even took up some temporary dance class with my friends, and some boxing class as it was quite popular back then. Having said that, all that have changed now as I have been a running enthusiast for the past 2 years.

Were you overweight when you started running for the first time?

I am normally the type of person who gains weight quite easily. Plus my work in which I am responsible for looking after my clients by taking them out for food and drinks, and the same goes for my friends when they come to visit me in Chiang Mai, this is usually the main reason I put on weight. My cheeks are always the first to show that I have put on some weight which then forces me to quickly go to the gym and run to maintain my weight at 43-44 kilograms.

Did you face any obstacles to exercising? How did you overcome them?

I think at the beginning tiredness was really the obstacle for me, so I tried to listen to music while exercising to keep me relaxed. Another obstacle for me was that I was not motivated enough to exercise as I did not have any friends to accompany me to the gym at first. So, I then found myself a group of friends who enjoyed exercising to help get me back on track, and also a trainer who was attentive, always followed up with me, and motivated me constantly. Another inspiration to help me overcome these obstacles was how I love taking photos of myself to see progress of the results from the exercises. This really helps motivate me to maintain my body in good shape always.

These are some of the inspirations which have helped many achieve their weight loss goals. This also shows that no matter how different inspirations or motivations each individual might have, discipline and consistency are the key components of successful weight loss. Namman Muay wishes to be one of your motivations to help you achieve your goals.
